Who We Are
Tamasha SD is a student-run, nonprofit organization established through the University of California, San Diego. Founded in April of 2015 by Karan Bhatnagar and Amit Sulakhe, the organization consists of an executive board and a collaborating team of interns who assist the executives in a variety of tasks in the hope of joining the Tamasha board in the future. Tamasha SD allows South Asian students of UC San Diego’s community to come together and celebrate their culture by hosting two of the biggest dance competitions: TamashaSD and Sanedo.
What We Do
Tamasha SD is an annual event that aims to connect South Asian Americans back to their roots while fostering a positive cultural environment for all diverse communities in the form of dance. As a showcase to educate these various diverse communities about Indian dance and culture, eight Bollywood-fusion dance teams from across the nation will be invited to express their cultural talents while having the chance to compete for a first-place prize.
Why We Do It
San Diego has been and continues to be a hub for dance and diverse cultures, so it was almost natural for Milan, Amit and I to decide to start this organization. Being immersed in Bollywood dance for a majority of our college careers allowed us to learn about our culture while expanding our connections to individuals in ways we never thought possible. This gave us a vision to connect the diverse neighborhoods of San Diego to an art form they are familiar with, but with the twist of a culture shock - Bollywood fusion dance. Indian culture is a growing interest in communities around the United States and our goal is to satisfy that niche by educating and expressing our love for dance at the local and national level. In the future, through our success, we hope to expand our reach and help those less fortunate. This is about dance, yes. But at its core, Tamasha SD is about so much more."
